Opening of the Yadua Rehabilitation and Relocation Project - January 2014
The issue of Disaster Risk Management is primarily under the National Disaster Management Office.
The Bua province does not have a DRM plan, however the 10 villages in the
district of Kubulau each has their own DRM plan outlining what each villager is responsible for when a disaster strikes. These plans have assisted the 10 Turaga ni Koro in Kubulau district to ensure their villagers are kept safe and out of harm’s way.
In December 2012 one of the worst cyclones that hit Fiji, Cyclone Evan, turned many lives in the Province of Bua upside down. The village of Denimanu on Yadua Island in the district of Vuya suffered widespread damage with 19 homes destroyed. These families lived in makeshift tents constructed from corrugated iron roofing, tarpaulin and coconut branches.
A government team visited the village and assessed that new homes could not be constructed where the old houses were but rather a new location further inland that was sheltered. The Bainimarama Government allocated close to half a million for the construction of 19 new homes and the new site was officially opened by the Honorable Prime Minister in January of 2014.
The Provincial Council is working closely with the Provincial Administrator’s Office to develop a Disaster Risk Management plan for the Province.
